Introduction

National Gallery on Indonesia is a cultural institution and the idea of its founding has been planned many years ago in the past. As a matter of fact, its foundation was commenced by the erection of (National Guest House for Artist) which was later developed with the Center Cultural Development. The main idea was firstly represented by the foundation of Building for Fine Arts Exhibition (February, 23, 1987) as a facility for activities in fine arts. Beginning the year of 1995, after some intensive lobbying and survival, the National Gallery has been realized on May 8, 1998 in Jakarta and one year later the building was declared opened and functionalized.

The task of this cultural institution is to carry out the process of collecting, documentation, registration, research, maintenance and repair, preservation, representation, information dissemination and educative guidance concerning fine art.

Semarak 30 Semar
by F. Widayanto

From June 6 until June 12
10 am - 8 pm

[A Building]

Feature 30 statues and 19 reliefs of the grandfatherly pot-bellied figure. In the hands and imagination of master potter F. Widayanto, Semar, the wisest character in Javanese mythology, could be anything. Anything that in the end boils down to the ancient wisdom of who holds the highest power of all: The people.

"Semar, in my mind, existed and was real and alive throughout time, and he existed for all nations and cultures," he says. Semar appears as a surrealist painter in Dali Mania. He becomes an Egyptian king in King Izmy, and a Greek god in Zeus Mar. The usually serene image of Semar gives way to a certain smugness in Belly Dragon, or pensiveness in Moody Blue.

But it was not an easy task to develop these reinterpretations of the mythical figure who always shows up last in wayang puppet performances, offering words of wisdom. The artist says it took him 13 years to grasp the essence of this character.[The Jakarta Post,Jakarta]
