Artist : I Gusti Nyoman Lempad

In 1936, Walter spies, Rudolf Bonnet, and Cokorda Gde Raka Sukaswati founded Pita Maha, a group of young Balinese artists with new styles.

I Gusti Nyoman Lempad ( 1865 - 1978 ). Lempad was born in Bedulu, and settled in Ubud. He becomes an important figure in Balinese art, even before Pita Maha was founded. When Mount Krakatau erupted in 1883, he had become a sculptor in Bedulu. Then, in the world of art in Ubud, he baceme the patronage of Cokorda Gde Agung Sukawati. He took the role as the architect in building Puri Ubud. Among the Ubud painters, Lempad was the oldest artist of Balinese modern artist belonged to Pita Maha. He had the talent in nearly all of art. Beside painting the classical episode of the story of Sutosoma, Jayaprana, and the others, he revealed the family and erotic themes. The dailly theme he often created were the busy life such as "Keluarga Brayut" ( Family Life ), having many children in the mythology. The development was the very important shift and innovation in Balinese new style of painting. After the independence, togther with Sukawati and Bonnet, he founded Golongan Pelukis Muda ( Group of Young Painters ) to replace the lost Pita Maha. Beside getting the local awards, in 1970, Lempad got an Award Anugerah Seni ( Art Award ) from the Goverment of Indonesian Republic.
