Artist : Sudjana Kerton

Sudjana Kerton, eventhough he also had ever learned to Ries Mulder, he did not study in Seni Rupa ITB ( the Plastic Art at the Technology Institute Bandung ). After the revolution for Independence he was an obsessed adventurer. Therefore, during 25 years when he studied, stayed, and moved from one place to another in Europe and the United States, the art observers did not recognoze him when discussing about Seni Rupa Indonesia ( the Plastic Art in Indonesia ). But, after returning to Indonesia, Kerton always got a great attention from the people corcerning the plastic art in Indonesia, because his art works had reached the strong aesthetic intensity. Kerton's art development can be devided into three periods:the period of the revolution for independence, that in Europe and the United States, and that after returning to Indonesia. Like other artists and fighters for independence, kerton also flared up the nationalism during the revolution time. He adopted the theme of fighting for independence, the document of the political events, and the themes of the environment and culture in his art works. Kerton expressed all the themes in the impressionism through the strong strokes and colours to reflect the emotion and spirit for revolution.

With the Sticusa scholarship, Kerton studied in Netherland and France. then he continued his study and stayed in the United States with the scholarship from Art Student's league ( ASL ). His art works, when he was inEurope, were in the Fauvis style, that many painters at that time followed. So was his art works when he was in the United States. He tended to apply the expresionsim abstraction that was strongly influenced the painters at that time. Yet, his art wotks reflected his feeling of longing to his native country. He tried to express the human psychology in his art works with the complete deformation style. In the period after arriving at Indonesia, many of his works reflected the reality of the people life. Not only the feeling of melancholy that he saw, his art works also reflected the feeling of humour and humanity of the unique life.
