The etabilisment of Indonesian National Gallery is the realization the effort in building the National Art Hall / National Art Development Cnter which has been pioneered since 1960s.
While waiting for the realization of the National Art Hall, Prof. Dr.Fuad Hasan ( at that time was the Minister of Education and Culture ) renovated the main building into a Visual Art Exhibition Building, Ministri of Education and Culture, as a facilityfor activities and appreciation of visual art which was officialityopen in 1987.
Trough the initiative of Prof. Edi Sedyawati ( at that time was the Director General of Culture ) the estabilisment of Indonesia National Gallerywas striven in 1995. Finally in 1998, the estabilisment was approved by the Coordinating Ministri of Development Supervisor and Goverment Agencies Utilization Num.34/MK.WASPAN/1998. It was then officiated later through the Ministri of Education and Cultur’s Decision Latter Num.099a/0/1998 amd its operational was open officially by the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Yuwono Sudharsono.
The organization structure in the begining of its estabilisment experienced some changes, the latest was when Indonesian National Gallery was under the Minister of Culture and Tourism. It was change through decision letter Num PM.41/OOT.001/MKP-2006.
The Organization and Work Procedures of Indonesian National Gallery is currently based on Ministerial Decree Num. 72/2012. It is a technical unit organization of the Ministry Of Education and Culture, and responsible to Director General of Culture.
Indonesia National Gallery collects, acquires and exhibits artworks such as: paintings, sketche s, graphics, sculptures, ceramics, photography,crafts, and installation art. Some are works by:Raden saleh, Hendra Gunawan, Affandi, S. Sudjojono, Basoeki Abdullah, Barli Sasmitawinata, Trubus, popo Iskandar, Ahmad Sadali, Nashar, Sujana Kerton, H. Widayat, Abas Alibasyah, Srihadi Soedarsono, Sunaryo, Amrus Natal sya, Hardi, Heri Dono, Dede Eri Supria, Ivan Sagita, FX Harsono, Lucia Hartini, Iriantie Karnaya, Hendrawan Riyanto, Nyoman Gunarsa, Made Wiyanta, Ida Bagus Made, I Ketut Soki, Wassily Kadinsky, (Rusia), Hans Hartung (Germany), Victor Vasaarely (Hungary), Sonia Delauney (Ukraine), Pierre Saulages (France), Zao wou ki (China). Moreover, artworks from Sudan, India, Peru, Cuba, Vietnam, Myanmar, etc.
The activities in Indonesia National Gallery are exhibitions ( permanent, temporary, travelling ), preservation, ( conservation, restoration, documentation), seminar, festival, competition, etc, which are related to the effort of increasing the understanding, skill and appreciation, of visual art. Indonesian National Gallery also provide a service for collection research and guiding for student and general public.
