Historical Exhibition “Visualization of the Expressions of Indonesian Heroines and Women Figures”
Exploration of Tamarin Gutha Technique in Silk Fabric

7 – 21 August 2017
C Building National Gallery of Indonesia

In line with the History-based Character Education Program as the spirit of Nawacita through the national movement of mental revolution, the Directorate of History of Directorate General of Culture, Ministry of Education and Culture in collaboration with Indonesian Women Art Teacher from Komunitas 22 Ibu initiated a Historical Exhibiton “Visualization of the Expressions of Indonesian Heroines and Women Figures”. This exhibition is initiated under the awareness that history is not always only taught by using written language such as script/archive, but also can be interpreted through the approach of “history of images”. This approach is manifested through visual works that are full of historical spirits. According to Director of History, Dra. Triana Wulandari, M,Si, building the awareness of historical values as a reinforcement of nationality and nationalism value is not only presented on textual forms, but can also be presented in various media, such as movies, comics, digital apps, electronics, socio-drama, events, tours, expeditions, and this time through the visualization of Gutha Tamarin technical expression on silk fabric by featuring national heroines and Indonesian women figures. This exhibition features 12 national heroines, 16 prominent movement figures, and 6 inspiring figures. The selection of the figures are based on several considerations: representing regions throughout Indonesia, national heroines appointed by the government, and the figures of movements and struggle representing the diverse Indonesian territories.

This Historical Exhibition that is curated by Citra Smara Dewi, displays 36 works of visual history involving 34 artists as well as educators ranging from kindergarten, junior high school, vocational high school teachers to university lecturers from various regions of Jakarta, Bandung, Banten, and Tangerang. The works presents diversity of expressions from the approach of realism, decorative, until the touch of cubism. The interesting thing about the works is the use of Gutha Tamarin Tecnique, namely a development of batik technique by using grinded acid seeds. The acid powder is then mixed with water and a little bit of vegetable fat or margarine into a kind of paste.

This paste functions as a substitute for paraffin wax barrier used in traditional batik techniques. The basic difference in this technique compared with traditional batik technique is that this technique does not use stove so it is often called “batik dingin” (cold batik) technique. Tamarin Gutha technique is combined with brush strokes, so there is a mixed media concept of batik and painting techniques in the artworks (mixed media) is an effort to build the creativity in among artists. The difficulty in exploring Gutha Tamarin and brush strokes on silk fabrics is to present the face character strength so the risk of failure is relatively high. But the sincerity, commitment, motivation, and the modesty in giving and accepting input among participants during the process of work is the reflection of character learning process worth appreciated.

The Historical Exhibition will be held from 7 – 30 August 2017 open at 10.00 am – 6.00 pm exhibited in C Building. This exhibition is scheduled to be officiated by Mrs. Iriana Joko Widodo, which one of the exhibited works will also feature her figure as an inspirational woman. As the series of events, there will be a workshop from 8 – 9 August 2017, at 8.00 am – 4.00 pm in the Multifunction Room of the National Gallery of Indonesia.
