Online Exhibition MANIFESTO VII “PANDEMI” is the seventh of Galeri Nasional Indonesia’s biennale MANIFESTO. The first MANIFESTO was initiated and held in 2008 to commemorate 100 years of the National Awakening Day. It then continued to MANIFESTO 2nd “Percakapan Masa” (2010), MANIFESTO #3 “ORDE dan KONFLIK” (2012), MANIFESTO No.4 “Keseharian” (2014), MANIFESTO V “ARUS” (2016), MANIFESTO 6.0 “MULTIPOLAR: Seni Rupa Setelah 20 Tahun Reformasi” (2018), and now MANIFESTO VII “PANDEMI”. MANIFESTO aims at mapping the Indonesian art development then embodied in a manifesto or a statement of attitude in the form of art expression.

The curators: Rizki A. Zaelani, Citra Smara Dewi, Sudjud Dartanto, Bayu Genia Krishbie, and Teguh Margono agreed to bring out “Pandemi” as the theme because of its relevance with the purpose of capturing the development of art practice through changes in daily lives caused by Covid-19. Its presentation and concept were then adjusted. Beforehand, MANIFESTO invited only selected artists under the curators’ recommendation, now it is open for anyone. Video format is selected because it is the most representative medium to express participant’s ideas, experiences, statements, and hopes to be presented online. 333 works from 267 participants submitted the open call, those were then curated into 217 selected works from 204 participants.

According to Rizki A. Zaelani the curation process of Online Exhibition MANIFESTO VII “PANDEMI” showed diverse works from two types of participants, the artists and non-artists. The artists submitted complex works loaded with metaphors of the relations between the pandemic and the value structure outside human reasoning ability. The non-artists came from different occupations such as doctors, students, teachers, employees, as well as housewives, showing two kinds of responses towards the pandemic. The first showed their struggle adapting with any changes happened, and the second, presented the pandemic as a heart-touching situation report.

The submitted works, though in video formats, were also varied. There were paintings presented in video, dances, theatrical acts, also works created with artificial intelligence. This variation also showed the development of new media art in Indonesia growing in the middle of challenges and complexity.

The Head of Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Pustanto said that the Online Exhibition MANIFESTO VII “PANDEMI” was a brave move from GNI to innovate and respond to the situation changes. With its creative and best efforts, this exhibition is hoped to be accepted by the public and becomes a reference for more online exhibitions to develop in the future.
