News : When an Abstract Painter Imaging Light

Marking his 20 years journey in the art world, Baron Basuning set his path on a solo exhibition. An abstract painting exhibition entitled “NOOR” was officially opened by Culturalist Erros Djarot on Tuesday evening (8/1/19) at Galeri Nasional Indonesia. “This exhibition is a moment for Baron to show himself through 38 abstract works,” said Erros.

“NOOR” is a visualization of Baron’s visit to some parts of the world. He got the richness of abstract art through the architectures which became more beautiful because of the light. Curator of the exhibition Eddy Sutriyono mentioned that the exploration of colors brushed on canvas by Baron made the light became a precious gem interesting for anyone to see them. Baron was amazed by the light reflection at the domes he visited. Started from the Nasrid Palace–Alhambra Mosque in Spain, Nasir Al Mulk Mosque (Pink Mosque) in Iran, and the Taj Mahal in India. Those places were powerful inspirations for Baron to create abstract paintings. “Unlike other Islamic architecture domes, Alhambra Mosque, Pink Mosque, and Taj Mahal have domes which show an abstraction of trimatra radiated beautifully because of the light,” said Eddy.

Besides imaging the light or “Noor”, Baron’s abstract paintings also reflect euphemism of anxiety, joy, happiness, and love. He expresses the artworks as if human and nature walk to the light presumably The Creator. He believes that God is something intangible, abstract, yet can be defined as the peak of all the light.

To Baron, “Noor” is not only defined literally as light but also guidance in his life, his activities, in being kind to others, also in his artistry. The religious life philosophy at this exhibition is Baron’s way to show his transformation to get closer to God. “The older we are, the more effort to get closer to The Creator,” said Baron. Nevertheless, Baron, as well as Eddy, did not force people to have the same interpretation as them about the religious representation at this exhibition. “Let people judge with their own view about the presented artworks, Baron, and the exhibition,” said Eddy.

“Noor” is still going on until 8 February 2019 at A Building of Galeri Nasional Indonesia. The access is free of charge from 10 AM to 7 PM. There are also some public programs accompanying this exhibition such as Seminar of Culture (11/1/2019), Artist Talk (13/1/2019), and Exhibition Tour every Saturday and Sunday.
