Prior to the end of 2019, the traveling exhibition will be held in Pasuruan, East Java located at Gedung Serbaguna Yon Zipur 10. Galeri Nasional Indonesia held an exhibition in the same city before from 27 November to 1 December 2013. The exhibition entitled “Panorama Indonesia” presented artworks from the national level drawing competition in 2013 displayed side by side with selected artworks by Pasuruan’s artists.

This traveling exhibition is a collaboration program of Galeri Nasional Indonesia with the Education and Culture Department of Pasuruan City also with the Community of Pasuruan Art Teachers and Artists. Curators of the exhibition, Sujud Dartanto, Teguh Margono, and Achmad Rosidi who give the title to this exhibition “Merandai Tanda-tanda Zaman” mentioned on their curatorial text that ‘merandai’ in the Bahasa Indonesia Official Dictionary meant ‘walkthrough (cross)..” summing up the title’s meaning into menyebrangi tanda-tanda zaman (crossing the signs of time). In brief, a certain time is acknowledged by its signs, on the other hand, there are no symbolic signs within a space or situation that are meaningless. This exhibition therefore aims at expressing various signs of the time that are thought of, experienced, and contemplated by the artists through artworks.

Art can be a media to see various sign symptoms: the perceived symptoms, the curiosity inviting symptoms, and the already understood symptoms. Presentation of the signs in the artworks is executed in a way that is unique and full of sign-playing, exciting. This is presented through 46 two-and-three-dimensional drawings from 47 artists. 29 of them are Pasuruan artists selected with a certain curatorial process, while other 18 artists are special invitation artists from various regions in Indonesia such as Banyumas, Pati, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Gresik, Mojokerto, Batu, Malang, Lamongan, and Tulungagung.

The head of Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Pustanto said that Pasuruan was selected as the exhibition place because this city had a treasure and strong potential of drawing. This capability was hoped to strengthen the existing national art ecosystem. “Through this exhibition, we hope that Pasuruan artists can give their contributions in reinforcing the identity of Indonesian art,” he said. He also expected that this exhibition could be an educative cultural tourism attraction for the public, as well as provide inspiration, motivation, also create a culture of art appreciation among the future generations of Indonesian art.

There will be also public programs accompanying this exhibition, namely, “Kuliah Umum” (public lecture) held every day by the exhibition artists, “Workshop Seni Gambar” (drawing workshop) with Garis Edelweiss (Artist) and Achmad Rosidi (Curator) on 6 December 2019 from 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm.
