Multitalented Artist, Anggiat Tornado Passed Away
“For God Sake who loves peace, be peaceful!”
An artist who does not only work in art, but also to interpret the nature of life through art, Anggiat Tornado passed away. His best and close friends sent their condolence messages as captured in his social media to accompany Anggiat’s way to the next life. The people around him remembered the artist who were born in October 6, 1969 as a generous person, a helping friend, a fun friend to discuss formally and informally. He was a friend who was always be expected.
Kang Anggi, his familiar nickname, was a well-reckoned artist especially in Bandung the place where he lived. He became a multitalented artist by joining several arts at once, starting from performing arts, visual art (painting), until photography. He joined Teater Lakon since 1989, also played in a performance held in Studiklub Teater Bandung (STB) which was the oldest realist theatre in Indonesia.
Kang Anggi also participated in various events both domestically and abroad. Some of them were Indonesia-Japan Exchange Performance Art held in three different cities: Barak Gallery, Bandung; Kedai Kebun, Yogyakarta; and Rumah Seni AIR, Jakarta (2001). Besides, he also participated in Bandung Performance Art Festival at Galeri Barak, Bandung (2000); and Pasar Seni ITB 2010. Kang Anggi also joined “Pameran Seni Rupa Tenda: Selusin Pelukis Plus” at the Parking Lot of the Kabupaten Cianjur Office (2011); a Photography Exhibition “Mereka Yang Di Tengah Jalan” at the Auditorium of Centre Culturel Francais (CCF), Bandung (2011), also a Solo Exhibition “Siapa Pun Bisa Menjadi Apa Pun” in Ethnography Museum Melayu, Akademi Pengajian Melayu, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2014).
Apparently his skill in arts was not only rely on his natural talent. Kang Anggi also sharpened it through a formal education. After graduated from SMA Negeri 1 Padang Sidimpuan, North Sumatera (1988), he took a Bachelor Degree of Architecture in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (graduated in 1996). He continued his study in Master Degree at the Faculty of Art and Design in Institut Teknologi Bandung (graduated on 2004) and Doctoral Degree in Literature Study of the Faculty of Cultural Science Universitas Padjajaran (graduated on 2015). He did an observation research about the Social and Political Ideology in Contemporary Art in Indonesia (2014).
Knowledge and experience that he got was transmitted to his young students through his profession as a permanent lecturer in Institut Seni Budaya Indonesia (ISBI), Bandung. He also taught in Telkom University, Universitas Pattimura and Universitas Pasundan.
Gaining a lot of achievements in his life did not make Kang Anggi stop. He continued to be active in creating artworks, working and sharpening his ability, whether as an artist or a teacher. Now, Kang Anggi is called by the Almighty. March 2017 became his last journey but his spirit and his enthusiasm in art become a role model for people around him.
